The Question
Are you struggling to navigate a change in organizational hierarchy?
Why it Matters
Navigating a change in who reports to you, who you report to, or who is now a peer can be tricky. It may be awkward when someone is now at an equal or higher level than you. Or when someone is now at an equal or lower level than you. You may be hesitant to challenge when you should. Or quick to challenge when you shouldn’t. You or the other person may feel threatened. You may be worried about how other people in the organization view the change. Or other people may have trouble adapting to the change. Sometimes one person may intentionally—or unintentionally—subvert the new hierarchy. It’s important to address challenges early on, with transparency and high-level neutrality. Delaying, ignoring, or denying usually makes things worse.
